The front of the knee comprises of the patella (kneecap) which sits on the bottom end of the femur (thigh bone). The patella is held in place by a number of structures including the quadriceps tendon (above) , the patellar tendon (below) and the retinaculae on either side. Any of these supporting structures or the patella itself can cause pain. Common conditions causing pain include:
